brooklyn by foot

I thought I'd kick off my NYC posts with a few photos of the Brooklyn neighbourhood where we based ourselves during our city visit. The apartment we rented was located in Brooklyn Heights, and we spent quite a bit of our time exploring the area and wandering into the charming surrounding suburbs. Brunch in Carroll Gardens or Cobble Hill quickly became part of our holiday rhythm, and we discovered some gorgeous cafe's* in the process.

These picturesque Brooklyn streets, lined with elegant trees and beautiful historic brownstones, have such a quaint village-esque feel, I'd often find myself forgetting that such an enormous concrete jungle was only a ten minute train ride away. I'd soon be reminded though, when we reached the promenade at the end of our street and were met with the most breathtaking views of lower Manhattan.

If we were lucky enough to spend a year in New York, we would most definitely set ourselves up in Brooklyn. This place will always have a little piece of my heart.

* I'm going to compile a series of our favourite New York Cafe's... all of them really deserve a whole post to themselves!

P.S - I have much more of Brooklyn to share, including Williamsburg and the flea , DUMBO and smorgasburg, the renegade craft fair and a bunch of cafe reviews - stay tuned!

  18. Such beautiful pictures, as always. May I ask what camera and lens you used? I'm in the process of buying new photo material and would love to photograph with such great light :-)

    1. Thank you so much! These photos are a mix of Canon 60d (with a 50mm 1.4 lens) and a canon 5d markIII (with a 35mm 1.4 lens). I rented the markIII and the 35mm lens for part of our trip - and I was rather sad to hand them back. Still, I am so happy with the performance of the 60d with a 50mm lens and it is the combo I use all the time on my blog (except for some of my holiday photos). Hope this helps!

  20. We went to New York in the February of 2011. We just didn't feel the love at all. We're putting New York back on the list of places to visit to give it a second chance, a better time of year perhaps and perhaps more open eyes.

    1. Oh, that's no good at all! Was it freezing in Feb? Holidays are never fun when you're freezing to the point of uncomfortable! Maybe our secret is that we had low expectations (we were travelling with a toddler so we weren't planning on having an 'easy' holiday). I think NY is somewhere you'd have to visit more than once anyway - impossible to see everything in a single visit! x

  24. Lovely photos - I'd love to visit NYC again as a family and take a wander at a slower pace (rather than the bar crawling funny fun times of my twenties the last time I was there;)

Really happy to have found your blog

  27. Dear Miss Claire,

I've just stumbled across your blog - from Pia Jane's links, I think - and am so glad I did. Have been enthralled by all your posts and photos. Your photography skills are just superb, with or without a 5D.

I'm a journalist, author and photographer who's done 18 books but I suspect I'm a terrible photographer, and looking at these beautiful images, I know it's true! Now I need to go find a day job...

Keep taking photos, and keep doing your blog when you can. I know it's challenging - mine is so much work too - but you really do inspire so many of us.

    All the very best,
Janelle McCulloch | A Library of Design

PS We love New York. We hope to move there later this year for work.
